MUMBAI: Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) officials on Monday said CNG prices can be reduced by nearly Rs 5 per kg if there was value-added tax (VAT) exemption by the state government.
Taxi unions here petitioned the state finance ministry, seeking the exemption for the green fuel. In Delhi, the government has exempted CNG from VAT.
If CNG prices drop here by around Rs 5 per kg, it will provide relief to more than two lakh private car owners besides 1.08 lakh automen, 42,000 cabbies, 6,000 from the fleet cab industry and 2,800 red buses plying in the city.
An MGL spokesperson said, "A review by the authorities (in Maharashtra) of the VAT structure on CNG and piped gas, in line with that applicable in Delhi (0 per cent on CNG and 5 per cent on piped gas) may provide huge relief to consumer."
